What are eating disorders?

Understanding Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are complex psychological conditions that fundamentally change how a person relates to food and their body. These shifts can look like eating significantly less than the body needs, over-exercising, experiencing cycles of compulsive overeating, or feeling an intense, painful preoccupation with weight and shape.

It is important to remember that anyone can be affected. These conditions do not discriminate, and can affect anyone of any age, gender, race, or body size. In fact, research shows that:

  • Prevalence: Approximately 9% of the U.S. population (nearly 29 million people) will struggle with an eating disorder in their lifetime.

  • Demographics: While often stereotyped, eating disorders affect all ethnicities at similar rates. However, BIPOC individuals are significantly less likely to be asked about eating disorder symptoms by doctors or to receive a formal diagnosis.

  • LGBTQ+ Community: Members of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly transgender individuals, experience eating disorders at rates nearly 2 to 4 times higher than their cisgender, heterosexual peers.

Healing is a Team Effort

While genetics accounts for about 60% of the risk, environment and life experiences play a significant role. Because eating disorders carry serious emotional and physical risks, the first step is often the hardest: reaching out for information.

Sustainable recovery depends on treatment and support from a dedicated "treatment team"—typically a dietitian, a therapist, and sometimes medical providers—working together to support your safety and progress. At Side by Side, we specialize in helping patients overcome their eating disorder and achieving full recovery. We commonly see patients struggling with:

  • Anorexia Nervosa & Atypical Anorexia

  • Bulimia Nervosa

  • Binge Eating Disorder (BED)

  • ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder)

  • OSFED (Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder)
